Crunchyroll is the world’s leading digital streaming platform, distributor, and community ecosystem dedicated to anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture. Founded in 2006 by a group of University of California, Berkeley graduates (led by Kun Gao), the platform transitioned from a grassroots user-uploaded video site into an international media powerhouse.
Operating as a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex (a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan), Crunchyroll solidified its dominance following the consolidation of its sister brand, Funimation. Today, Crunchyroll hosts the world’s largest dedicated legal anime library, encompassing over 50,000 episodes, 2,000+ series and films, original productions (Crunchyroll Originals), mobile gaming titles, and integrated e-commerce.
